Gilbert Mazout

Gilbert Petit, aka Gilbert Mazout, is a visual artist who draws inspiration, sometimes formal or conceptual, from popular cultures. Born in Togo in 1971, he is immersed in the pop culture of comics and witnessed the emergence of graffiti and post-punk cultures. His work as an artist, at the crossroads of multiple artistic “genres” is based on narration, abstraction, even figuration and is delivered through pictorial works or installations. Adept at collage and visual sample, his compositions are odes to the primordial chaos of animist cultures.

Gilbert Petit nourishes his works with his own crossbreeding and the languages of his African, Asian and European roots. Regardless of the support, one finds the flat colors of Pop Art, the plastic language of comics, free figuration and street art gestures but also in the background, the cult of ancestors…
